Bed Linen, Duvets and Tog

We sleep 8 hours in every 24, so we all need bed linen.

What is Tog?

Black Baby Bed

Tog is a measure of thermal resistance. Basically how warm your duvet will remain. If you always cold in bed then you will want a high Tog duvet, such as 13.5. If you are always hot in bed then a 4.5 Tog duvet is good.

For most people, a different Tog is required per season to keep them at maximum comfort. For Winter a 10.5 or 13.5 Tog Duvet is good, for Spring and Autumn a 10.5 tog duvet and for summer a 4.5 Tog duvet.

There is such a thing as an all season duvet. This is an ingenious little duvet which is 13.5 Tog in total, but it is made up of a 9.0 Tog and a 4.5 Tog duvet. This gives you a really warm duvet for Winter, a relatively warm one for Autumn and Spring and a really light comfortable one for the summer.

Duvet and Sheet Sizes need to match your bed size. A double duvet will probably be far too hot folded double on a single bed! A single duvet may however work OK on a double bed, just so long as you don't mind it looking a bit odd and don't intend to have anyone staying over! The most annoying problem that will arise is if you find out your double bed is actually three quarter size, as there will be spare duvet and your fitted sheets may be too large!

Have you got a dust mite allergy or asthma? You may want to consider an anti-allergy duvet. These are slightly more expensive but are not made with feathers and so will give you a better quality night sleep!

Pillows

The average pillow contains up to 16 types of fungus. Interestingly feather pillows have fewer species than synthetic ones - particularly in the case of a fungus which sets off asthma. The fungi feed off human skin scales and dust mite faeces.

The depth of the pillow is important, as it is vital to a sleeper's well being that the spine, neck, head and shoulders are kept in alignment, relieving pressure and adverse tension on the muscles. This is done based on personal preference and body mass, and the height of the pillow should be around 4 inches from the mattress. When lying on the back the pillow gives support to the natural curvature of the spine which will give a consistent level of support under the head, neck and shoulders. While, for those lying on their side, the pillow supports the head and keeps the spine in a natural horizontal line. Because our neck curves slightly forward to hold the weight of the head when standing or sitting, it means that this curve needs to be maintained when lying down. If the pillow is too high then the neck will be bent abnormally and this can cause muscle tension to the back of the head and shoulders, or could cause obstructed breathing through narrowing of the wind pipe, possibly snoring and poor quality of sleep. Having the pillow too low may also cause excess tension on neck and shoulder muscles.

You would imagine bed linen should be made of linen but this is not necessarily so.

100% hemp bed linen is a luxurious fabric with all the tactile qualities and environmental credentials that should position hemp as the thinking persons choice of bed linen.

Hemp's hollow fibres make it naturally thermostatic - warm in winter and cool in summer - and it wicks moisture away better than other natural fibres. Both these qualities contribute to a comfortable night's sleep. Like linen it is crisp to feel but will soften with every wash thus inspiring a Tuscan saying "While linen wears out, hemp wears in". In the field it needs neither pesticides nor herbicides and less water than either cotton or linen.

The bedlinen is woven and made up in Italy in two traditional styles - double row cord and hemstitch - available in either pale ivory or white.

It is even possible to get organic bed linen, all made from 100% organically farmed & manufactured Egyptian cotton.
