The Role of Colors Textures and Patterns in Early Infant Development

Colors, textures and patterns in children's bedding: Solutions to promote a restful night and early infant development.

Black Baby Bed

Your infant may not be able to speak in a manner we readily understand but recent science has shown that their senses are busy learning all the time. It has been proven that when a child's senses are regularly stimulated the faster that child will develop.

Consider the sense of touch: a key element in an infant's contact with the world. Simple things like color, pattern, shape or texture - things adults ignore or take for granted - these same things speak volumes to a baby. For example, the different feel of fabrics like flannel, sateen and cotton to little fingers help develop the sense of touch.

As a child explores the difference between the smoothness of sateen and the soft nap of flannel or the shape of a pillow or crib bumper their cognitive development is enhanced.

Recent studies have shown that infants' eyes are not yet developed enough to recognize subtle color differences that an adult would immediately recognize. For example, mature eyes can easily distinguish between a pale turquoise and a pastel blue while an infant cannot.

Babies under 8 months of age will respond more readily to strong, bright colors.(a) On the other hand, as early as 8 or 9 weeks, a newborn's sensitivity to contrasts - light and dark - is much stronger. Thus bold black and white shapes are the easiest for newborns to see and can strengthen visual acuity.

Fabrics with colorful prints featuring animals, flowers and geometric designs can not only add pizzazz to the décor but can improve recognition and learning and spur early development overall.

Sights, sounds, smells, texture -- all play an important role. It's key to remember that when you engage your child's many awakening senses, they will not only learn about the many differences in their new world, but will learn to enjoy them!
